Instrumentation Mastery Blueprint – Handling Hazardous Materials

Handling Hazardous Materials

We are kicking off the blueprint with a discussion on handling hazardous materials!

The curriculum being used can be found here under section U6551.02 and U6551.03.

This will be one of the first skills you will be signed off on as an instrumentation apprentice. This is because as an instrumentation apprentice, you’ll work around various chemicals and gases. You may even be working with the chemicals themselves.

When you get started on the job you will be receiving WHMIS training. WHIMIS will cover the following things:

  • Identifying Dangerous Materials: Recognition is the first step toward safety.
  • Proper Storage Methods: Ensuring that materials are stored correctly to prevent accidents.
  • Choosing Appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): Selecting the right gear to protect yourself.
  • Emergency Response: How to act swiftly and effectively in case of an incident.
  • Understanding Safety Data Sheets (SDS): Learning to read these sheets is crucial for information on hazards and first aid measures.
  • Spill Prevention: Strategies to prevent the release of dangerous substances.

What I’d like to get across is that if you don’t know, ask. Make sure that if you are handling material that you are unfamiliar with that you look up the page for it in the SDS. It will tell you the dangers of the material and first aid information in case you get exposed.

Also, make sure that when you are working with dangerous materials that you know where your closest safety showers and eye wash stations are in case of an emergency.

Conclusion

Upon completion of WHMIS you will be certified to work with dangerous materials and congratulations, you will be one step closer to completing the required skills required to become a Journeyman!
